Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been continuously employed as a health care modality for over 3,000 years. The general theory of acupuncture is based on patterns of energy flow along 14 primary pathways, or meridians. When the flow is harmonious, health is abundant. When the energy is blocked or depleted, there is illness or pain. Acupuncture corrects energy imbalances to restore health and relieve pain.

Acupressure and Shiatsu

Acupressure and Shiatsu are systems of finger pressure massage based on Eastern healing concepts that treat special points along meridians.  These are invisible paths of energy that flow in the body and may cause physical discomfort if blocked.  The aim of treatment is to release the blockage and re-balance the energy flow.

Breath Therapy

Breath Therapy uses specific respiratory exercises to open lung passages, oxygenate the blood and cleanse the body by eliminating gaseous toxins.  The client is encouraged to breathe deeply while the therapist works the appropriate muscles.  This can help to ease anxiety and stress.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine has been in continual use and refinement for 3,000 years.  Herbal medicines are usually prescribed in formulas, which are groups of herbs combined to address the individual’s expression of an illness.  These formulas have the capacity to address the underlying root cause of various medical conditions, whether acute or chronic.

Craniosacral Therapy

CST is a gentle technique that addresses the vital craniosacral system, comprised of the cerebrospinal fluid and membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.  This method uses very light pressure and traction to detect and correct imbalances thus encouraging your own natural healing mechanisms to be activated.  Releasing these effects, which have a negative impact on the central nervous system, can have a profound affect on the entire body.

Massage

Massage is traditionally defined as the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes, using a system of strokes that includes gliding, kneading, friction, pressure, tapping and/or vibrating. Additionally, massage therapists may engage in active movement of the joints, use auxiliary mechanical devices and apply heat or cold in various forms. They may also instruct clients on exercises to improve muscle strength, range of motion, posture or circulation and to ease tension. Massage may decrease pain, stress and fatigue, increase joint flexibility, promote faster healing of injured muscle or scar tissue, reduce blood pressure and promote better sleep. Sometimes referred to as traditional or Western massage, the Swedish method described first below has historically formed the basis for massage in the United States. But many contemporary massage practices offer a variety of specialties and techniques that are customized to the client's goals, preferences and health status. Those offered here are listed below. Please visit www.massagetherapy.com for more information.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a vigorous system of treatment designed to energize the body. It includes five basic strokes, all flowing to the heart, used to manipulate soft tissue. This type of massage may be used for general relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue and adhesions, and stimulation of circulation which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury or illness.

Chair Massage

Chair Massage (a.k.a. Seated or On-Site) provides seated, fully clothed massage and bodywork therapies to clients, often in a corporate, business, or community setting.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage techniques are administered to affect the sub-layer of musculature and fascia. They can help with chronic muscular pain and injury rehabilitation and are generally combined with other massage techniques.

Geriatric Massage

Geriatric Massage is focused on both well and frail older adults, addressing the physiological and psychological aspects of aging and its associated challenges.

Integrated Massage

Integrated Massage (a.k.a. Eclectic) indicates a combination of massage, bodywork, and somatic therapy techniques incorporated as appropriate to customize a session to the client’s specific needs.

Kriya Massage

“Kriya” is an ancient Sanskrit word that means “continuous flow.” It utilizes an intuitive approach integrating the art and science of touch. Kriya massage combines the universal, life-affirming flow of energy between practitioner and client with traditional massage and bodywork techniques into a smooth, connected pattern of fluid motion called the “Kriya dance.”

Maternity Massage

Maternity Massage is performed by a trained perinatal specialist.   Using effective and safe massage and somatic therapies, this massage may be applied prenatally, during labor and postpartum.

Oncology Massage

Oncology Massage is tailored to the needs of individuals in cancer treatment, in recovery, or at the end of life.  A specialized practice, it requires advanced training that includes appropriate and safe bodywork modalities for clients with cancer, as well as physiology, pathology, and precautions for clients in preparation, during and/or following cancer treatment.

Sports Massage

Sports Massage is classified into three main categories: 1) maintenance - a regular program of massage to help athletes reach optimal performance through injury-free training, 2) event - takes place before, during, and/or after competition to enhance the body’s warm-up/recovery process, and 3) rehab - rehabilitation management of acute or chronic injuries.

Partner Massage

Exchange – provided in a private training setting, friends or family members take turns giving a massage to their partner(s) while receiving hands-on assistance and instruction from the massage therapist for the application of safe and soothing techniques, that may then be provided independently at home.

Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle Energy Technique is a direct, non-invasive manual therapy used to normalize joint function and increase range of motion. The affected joints are placed in precise positions that enable the client to perform isometric contractions.  This helps to correct neuromuscular and joint difficulties.

Myofascial Release

MFR is a hands on approach to dealing with either pain or tightness in the muscles and connective tissues. Since the fascia/connective tissue is continuous throughout the body, work can be done locally at the site of injury or indirectly/remotely or away from the area of discomfort. Some maneuvers are quite gentle while others use much deeper pressure or stretching.  This range of possibilities allows your therapist to customize the treatment for your comfort and maximum benefit. Releasing the fascia can provide relief where other stretching programs have not been successful.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a science based on principles similar to acupuncture. Foot reflexology involves manipulating distinct areas or “reflex points” on the feet.  (These reflex points may also be found on the hands and ears, but many people prefer a session to focus on their feet.)  By applying specific techniques and pressures to the joints, tissues and complex network of nerve-endings in the foot, the skin, muscles, circulatory and nervous systems are stimulated to promote relaxation.  This enhances function in many other aspects of the mind and body.   Reflexology may also reduce stress, improve circulation, revitalize energy, and decrease pain and discomfort in the feet.  Please visit www.reflexology-research.com/whatis.htm for more information.

Reiki

Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a technique for relaxation that also reduces pain and stress, promotes self-healing, and enhances balanced function of the mind and body.  It involves placement of the practitioner’s hands in precise areas either directly on or just above the body, bringing healing energy to the tissues, organs, glands and wherever else it is needed by the recipient.  Based on the principles of Universal Life Energy (known as ki in Japanese, chi  in Chinese), reiki is believed to date back over 2500 years to early Tibetan healing practices.  Brought to the United States in the mid-1900s, it is currently used in a wide range of settings, such as hospitals, health centers and corporate offices.  Reiki does not conflict with standard medical procedures or religious beliefs. Please visit www.reiki.org. for more information.
Training is also available to become a reiki practitioner.
